The Hohnstein Puppet Theatre Festival is supported by the City of Hohnstein and the Cultural Region of Meißen – Sächsische Schweiz – Osterzgebirge. It has taken place annually in May since 1986, with the exception of a two-year break due to the pandemic.
Around 20 theatre groups from all over Germany perform approximately 50 shows over two days for 2,500 to 3,000 spectators. The festival opens on Friday evening.
The Hohnstein Festival is different from what you might expect: it’s not a competition with a jury, certificates, or prizes – making it one of a kind in Germany. It combines improvised charm in a picturesque setting and unique atmosphere with a family-friendly spirit and high artistic standards, offering a wide range of puppet theatre styles.
Performances take place at Hohnstein Castle – in the castle hall, smaller venues, and the newly renovated castle garden – as well as throughout the town: in the church, the town hall courtyard, and the Max Jacob Theatre. The castle also serves as accommodation, allowing groups traveling from further away to stay overnight. Travel and lodging costs (from a distance of 50 km or more) are covered if needed, depending on the performance schedule.

Die Anmeldung ist eingegangen! Das Stück befindet sich nun im Rennen um einen Platz beim 38. Hohnsteiner Puppenspielfest, das vom 29. bis 31. Mai 2026 stattfinden wird.
Was passiert als Nächstes?
Das Organisationsteam prüft alle eingereichten Beiträge mit großer Sorgfalt und Aufmerksamkeit. Die Künstlerinnen und Künstler der ausgewählten Stücke werden bis spätestens 15. November 2025 benachrichtigt. Bis dahin bitten wir um etwas Geduld.
Ein herzlicher Dank für die Teilnahme – die Vorfreude auf die kreativen Beiträge wächst, und es bleibt spannend, ein einzigartiges Fest zu gestalten, das Kunst und Leidenschaft vereint sowie die Vielfalt der Puppenspielkunst zeigt! Die Neugier ist groß!
